Federal Court: U.S. Can Jail Civilians Indefinitely WITHOUT Being Charged with a Crime
From DemocracyNow! - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 A federal appeals court has ruled President Bush can order the indefinite jailing of civilians imprisoned in the United States WITHOUT Charges. Editors note: On October 17, 2006, President George W. Bush signed into law the Military Commissions Act of 2006 (MCA). Even elected officials, like Republican Senator Arlen Specter, who publicly acknowledged that the MCA is "patently unconstitutional on its face," voted for it. The Military Commissions Act of 2006 authorizes the President to detain anyone, including U.S. Citizens, without charge by designating them enemy combatants or unlawful enemy combatants. The Military Commissions Act of 2006 authorizes the President to determine what constitutes torture. The Military Commissions Act of 2006 authorizes the use of evidence obtained by coercion (TORTURE) and the use of hearsay. Some people can't believe this is really happening. When confronted with information such as this, people sometimes respond with some type of apathetic comment such as, "As long as it doesn't directly effect me..." or the most incredulous statement, "It's THEIR country, I just live in it." For these people, this is just about the best ammo a person can get to help convince them that yes, it does DIRECTLY effect them! The President CAN point a finger at THEM and put them in JAIL FOREVER... JUST BECAUSE!!! Yes, it does directly effect everyone because according to the Military Commissions Act of 2006, the President gets to define the meaning of "Unlawful Enemy Combatant." It is also the President (or his attorney General) who gets to decide who falls within the classification of "Unlawful Enemy Combatant." So... that effectively leaves out NO ONE! We are ALL effected!
